Dr. Douglas Gordon Hesbol
Welcome to Laraway Community Consolidated School District 70C. Laraway District 70C was created in 1954 when four local schools with a total area of 23 square miles consolidated to create one school district. Oak Valley School, near the homes of our families, serves Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students. Laraway School supports children in grade one through eight. 395 students attend the two schools. The Laraway School District serves a diverse population including 81% African-American, 12% Hispanic, and 7% Caucasian students.
The Laraway School District has provided quality education to generations of students for 55 years. Our schools serve students in an area of Joliet that has seen dramatic changes, especially in recent years. The industrial development in our area has permitted the School District to develop partnerships with Chicagoland Speedway, DollarTree Distribution Center, the Vulcan Quarry, among other local businesses and organizations. Within a mile of our District Office located at Laraway School, we are pleased to welcome a new partner. The CenterPoint Intermodal Project is being developed on 3,300 acres at a cost of $2 Billion is well underway to become the largest port of its kind in the United States. This development will initially support 6,000 new jobs with the forecast for 10,000 jobs in the future.
There is a sense of destiny within our staff and community as the Laraway School District reinvents itself. With a sound commitment to supporting an effective instructional program that puts kids first, dramatic changes have occurred including the development of district curriculum; implementation of the Positive Behavior Interventions and Support program; focus on the Response To Intervention program across all grade levels; restoration of special area programs including Athletics, Art, Library Media Center, Music, and Technology. During the 2008 – 09 school year the Seventh Grade Boys Basketball team won the State Championship. The Eighth grade team won the third place trophy. Thanks to the wisdom and vision of the Laraway Board of Education, District 70C has invested in technology for staff and students now providing a 2.5:1 ratio of Apple Laptops to students. With all these program improvements, the Laraway School District has operated with a balanced budget the past five years receiving Illinois State Board of Education’s Financial Recognition.
Highlights of the Laraway District are the Pre-K program that has been in place for three and four year olds for 10 years. The district is offering a full day Kindergarten program for the third year. A growing English Language Learner’s program is effectively operating in both schools. The district continues to offer an academic After-School Program supported by the Joliet Boys and Girls Club that has been in place for almost 10 years.
The Laraway Community Consolidated School District 70C offers many programs and staff that support instruction first. Laraway 70C is moving toward the intersection of performance and innovation. As generations of students and parents can attest, the Laraway School District is a special place where teaching, learning, and Kids come first!
